How to Use Modifiers in Shopbox

Step-by-step guide to setting up choices, add-ons, and opt-outs – so your products fit customers’ wishes perfectly

Modifiers make your products flexible. They help staff make the right selections at checkout and give customers exactly the experience they want – whether it’s a standard choice, an add-on, or removing an ingredient.

Step 1: Understand the three types of Modifiers

  • Mandatory: Must be selected before proceeding (e.g., bread type).

  • Add on: Optional extras, often with an additional cost (e.g., extra cheese).

  • Opt out: Default ingredients that can be removed (e.g., no onions).

💡 Think of a burger: the customer chooses bread (mandatory), adds cheese (add on), and removes onions (opt out).

Step 2: Create a Modifier Group (when choices should be reused)

  1. Go to MyShopbox > Product Catalog > Modifiers

  2. Click + Create Modifier Group.

  3. Name the group, e.g., “Bread Type” or “Burger Extras.”

  4. Add the specific options, e.g., White bread, Whole grain bread, Brioche.

  5. Save.

💡 Benefit: If you update the group, all products using it are updated automatically.

Step 3: Create an individual Modifier (for one-off choices)

  1. Go to MyShopbox > Product Catalog > Modifiers

  2. Click + Create Modifier.

  3. Give it a name, e.g., “Gift wrap” or “Add cutlery.”

  4. Add a price if it’s an add-on.

  5. Save.

💡 Use this when you only need to add a single choice and not a whole group.

Step 4: Link modifiers to a product

  1. Open the product in the new Product Page.

  2. Scroll down to Modifiers.

  3. Add either a group or a single modifier.

  4. Select its type (Mandatory, Add on, or Opt out).

  5. Set rules:

    • Mandatory: Included in the price, optionally set a preselected option

    • Add on: Set price and choose if some should be included in the price.

    • Opt out: No setup required.

  6. Define order and visibility (POS and/or Weorder).

  7. Save.

Step 5: Test in POS

  1. Press Refresh in POS to load changes.

  2. Select the product.

  3. Mandatory choices appear first (must be selected).

  4. Then Add ons.

  5. Finally, Opt outs as removable standard ingredients.

  6. Confirm that prices and totals adjust correctly.

Step 6: Check in Weorder

Weorder updates automatically via API. Verify that the changes appear and that visibility is set correctly for customers online.

Step 7: Go live with confidence

Checklist:

  • Are Mandatory rules set with correct min./max.?

  • Are Add on prices and “Included in price” set correctly?

  • Is Opt out only used for options that don’t affect the price?

  • Have you tested the flow in POS with a colleague?

This way, you’ll have a simple setup that creates a smooth experience both in-store and online – and customers always get exactly what they order.
